The aggregate statistics published on this site — domain counts, growth figures, registrar market share, registry and backend attribution, DNSSEC and nameserver breakdowns — are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.

You may copy, reshape, chart, and republish them, including commercially. The one condition is attribution: credit ntlddata.com and, where the medium allows, link to the page or API endpoint the figures came from.

That is a deliberate choice rather than a grudging one. This site exists because the previous source of these numbers stopped updating and nothing replaced it; data that cannot be quoted is not much use.

Please state which month you are quoting

Not a licence condition, but the request we care about most. This site publishes two kinds of figure on two different clocks:

• Zone-derived figures — domain counts, daily adds and drops, DNSSEC, nameserver share — are refreshed daily.
• Registrar figures — market share, transfers, deletions, renewals — come from ICANN's monthly registry reports, which publish about three months in arrears. Zone files contain no registrar information at all, so no fresher source exists.

A registrar market-share number quoted as "current" is wrong by roughly a quarter. Every page and every API response carries the date or month it describes; please carry it through. The methodology page sets out every source and limitation, and status shows live freshness.

What this licence does not cover

Zone file data. This site holds no publishable copy of any registry zone and offers no domain-name search or download. Zone files are obtained under ICANN's Centralized Zone Data Service terms, which permit analysis but prohibit redistribution — so only aggregates are published here, and the extracted name lists used to compute daily adds and drops are deleted after two days. If you need zone data, request it from CZDS directly; it is free for legitimate research.

The upstream sources. ICANN's and IANA's own publications carry their own terms. Our licence applies to the statistics derived here, not to their originals.

Using the API

Free, no key, no signup. Rate limited per IP to protect availability — generous enough that you will only meet it while sweeping the whole dataset quickly. A 429 carries a Retry-After; honour it and you will not be blocked.

If you want the full dataset regularly, take it the cheap way: one paged sweep of /api/v1/tld?per=500 is three requests, against 1,100 if you crawl the pages. Send If-None-Match and unchanged data costs a 304. Details on the API page.

Acceptable use

There is no login, so there is not much to agree to. Two requests:

• Respect the rate limit. A 429 carries a Retry-After; honour it. Ignoring it repeatedly is the one thing that will get an address blocked, and it is avoidable — the API page shows how to take the whole dataset in three requests.
• Do not present this data as something it is not. Specifically, do not republish registrar figures without their reporting month, and do not describe inferred registry-backend groupings as confirmed fact. Both are labelled here and the labels matter.

Deliberately attempting to degrade the service, or using it to build contact lists, is not permitted. On the second point, note there is nothing here to build one from: no registrant data and no domain names are published.

Privacy

No cookies, no analytics, no third-party resources. Server logs keep IP addresses for 14 days for security and rate limiting, and nothing else is collected. Full detail on the privacy page.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States, and any dispute arising from use of this site is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Oregon.

Nothing here limits rights you hold under the law of your own country of residence that cannot be waived by agreement — including, for visitors in the UK or EEA, your data protection rights, which are set out on the privacy page.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change materially — particularly the licence — the change will be described on this page rather than quietly substituted. Work already published under CC-BY 4.0 stays licensed under it; that grant is not revocable.

These figures are derived from third-party sources by an automated pipeline and are provided as-is, without warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for any purpose. Backend attribution in particular is inferred and labelled as such where it is a grouping rather than a verified fact. Do not use this site as the sole basis for a commercial, contractual or legal decision without verifying against the primary sources, all of which are named on methodology.
