Upcoming TLDs and launch calendar

Strings that are not yet generally available: contracted with ICANN but not delegated, or delegated with a sunrise or trademark-claims window still to run. ICANN requires registries to file these dates in advance, so this looks forward rather than back.

The 2026 application round closed on 12 August 2026. ICANN has not yet published the applied-for strings; when it does, they will appear here at the applied stage and move through evaluation, contracting and delegation. The pipeline below is thin today because the 2012 round is fully worked through — which is exactly why it is worth watching now.

Launch calendar

Sunrise and trademark-claims windows that are open now or still to come, soonest first. From ICANN's published startup information.

During sunrise only trademark holders may register. A claims period follows, in which registrations matching a trademark trigger a notice to the applicant. General availability begins once both have closed.

Contracted, awaiting delegation

A signed registry agreement with ICANN, but the string is not yet in the root zone. This is the stage at which a genuinely new TLD first becomes public.

Registry transitions in progress

Still in the root zone, but the registry agreement is recorded as terminated — usually a change of operator or a wind-down. The earliest public signal that a TLD is changing hands; domain counts typically move afterwards, not before.

TLDs by contractual category

From the registry agreement, not guessed from the string. Specification 13 marks a .brand; Specification 12 marks a community TLD. IANA's root database calls all of them simply "generic".

Brand TLDs are restricted to their owner, so they carry few domains but a large share of the count of strings — worth remembering when reading any per-TLD ranking.

Data currency. Domain counts on this page are from zone files dated and refresh daily. Registrar figures are from ICANN's monthly registry reports for April 2026, which ICANN publishes about three months in arrears; zone files contain no registrar information, so no fresher source exists. Full detail on methodology and live pipeline status.
